'Bows Softball fires back to sweep UC San Diego

No joke! Hawaiʻi sweeps UC San Diego, Lopez earns no-hitter

The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team rebounded from Friday night's 4-1 loss to the UC San Diego Tritons to sweep UCSD, 2-0, and 3-0, at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium on Saturday.

Game #1 (2-0 UH)

After a scoreless first inning, the Wāhine came out with a point to prove.  That started with an Izabella Martinez double.  Then, a Mya'liah Bethea single put Martinez at third base; UCSD committed a throwing error after Bethea stole second base, which allowed Martinez to come running home, putting UH on the board first, 1-0.

After three straight scoreless innings, the 'Bows did more good by loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth.  Martinez belted a double to left field that was almost a home run as Kaʻena Keliinoi came running home to make it 2-0 Hawaiʻi.  Unfortunately, UH could not convert a possible grand slam, but they did not need to.

From that point on, it would remain 2-0 as UH evened the series at 1-1 and outhit UCSD 8-6.

Game #2 (3-0 UH)

The Wāhine were not done yet heading into the second and final game.  It was the Maya Nakamura and Haley Johnson show, as both ladies were solely responsible for all three of the Wāhine's runs.

Hawaiʻi got on the board immediately, which started with a Nakamura double in the first.  Johnson put the icing on the cake with an RBI double to left center field that allowed Nakamura to come running home.

After three scoreless innings, Nakamura belted a single in that fourth inning.  Johnson belted a two-run homer to left-center field, which allowed her and Nakamura to score and make it 3-0 Hawaiʻi.  The homer by Johnson was her fourth of the season and seventh of her career.

It would remain 3-0 for the final three innings, and Brianna Lopez capped off the doubleheader with a career-first no-hitter to join in on the Wāhine jamboree.

UH improves to 22-13 overall, and 5-4 in Big West play.  They will now hit the road to take on Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Friday, Apr. 7 at 2 p.m. HST, and on Saturday, Apr. 8 at 11 a.m. HST and at 1:30 p.m. HST.
