Hawaiʻi men's basketball splits series with UC Davis in 2024

Slow start dooms 'Bows' chances of a sweep against UC Davis

On Thursday, the University of Hawaiʻi Men's Basketball team suffered a costly 75-63 loss to the UC Davis Aggies at the University Credit Union Center in Davis, California. This marks UH's third loss in the last nine games.

Bernardo da Silva led UH with 20 points. Justin McKoy was the next closest with only nine, but he had a game-high nine rebounds.

Elijah Pepper and Ty Johnson proved to be too much for UH to handle, as both scored 30 points each to lead UC Davis.

Davis came firing out of the gate, scoring the first eight points of the game, which prompted an early UH timeout.

Ryan Rapp got UH on the board via a triple, but UC Davis was not done. Due to Davis's defense, UH would ultimately commit four turnovers in the first three minutes.

After back-to-back UC Davis field goals, Rapp gave UH another spark with his second consecutive triple. At the first media timeout, it was 16-13 UC Davis.

Davis continued to lead with timely field goals that turned into a 9-0 run while UH went through a bad scoring drought of over four minutes.

Juan Munoz stopped the bleeding with a triple -- UH's fourth -- but Davis was not intimidated. That Munoz triple was UH's only field goal, as UH suffered another scoring drought of three minutes while their next few points came at the free throw line.

After being down by 14 with 4:32 remaining, UH would close the first half on a 12-4 run, making their final four field goals. UC Davis Coach Jim Les was also given a technical foul with 36 seconds left after Johnson fell to the court. UH's only hiccup was not getting a shot off at the buzzer.

At the half, UC Davis still led, 38-32. Johnson led Davis and all players with 15, followed by Pepper's 10. For UH, da Silva led the team with only eight points.

Rapp got the second half started with a clutch layup less than a minute in, but UC Davis responded with a 7-0 run with 17:09 remaining.

Unfortunately, UH went through another plethora of fouls and found themselves with seven team fouls only six minutes in. It did not get any better, as UH went through another four-minute scoring drought.

With under 10 minutes left, UH put things together with an 11-0 run and cut the gap down to four while UC Davis went scoreless for the next four minutes.

Unfortunately for UH, Pepper ruined the
ir rally with nine unanswered, which included an and-1 triple. That prompted a full timeout for UH at the 4:31 mark. To make matters worse, UH could not get within striking distance the rest of the way.

UH drops to 8-9 in Big West play and 16-13 overall while Davis improves to 12-6 in the Big West and 17-12 overall. UH has a chance to split the road trip as they head to UC Riverside on Saturday, Mar. 2. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. HST; you can listen to the game on ESPN Honolulu.
