Hawaiʻi softball earns series win over UC Davis Aggies

'Bows softball wins first series over UC Davis since 2017

Two out of three is not bad.

The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team earned a critical win over the UC Davis Aggies, 3-2, at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium on Sunday, which gave Hawaiʻi the 2-1 series win. It was the first time in eight years that UH accomplished this feat over UC Davis.

UH struck first with two runs in the first inning. That started with two stolen bases from Liliana Thomas, and Carys Murakami. With two outs, Thomas successfully stole second while Murakami simultaneously stole home for the first run of the game. Milan Ah Yat executed a single to right field to bring in Thomas for the early 2-0 lead.

Neither Davis nor Hawaiʻi saw a run for the next four innings. Both teams were held to no more than three hits during that time.

UC Davis finally got on the board in the sixth inning via a Sydney Polli home run to left center. Then, teammate Grace Kilday executed a triple down right field, only to be tagged out at home base after a Marley Panziera fielder's choice. Davis got a second run scored anyway via Sophia Anderson from an Alyssa Dethlefson RBI single to tie the score at 2-2.

UH was ready when it was their turn. With one out, Ah Yat hit a double down left center. UH swapped Ah Yat with Keely Kai, and Ellyanna Cinzori would get to first on a Davis fielding error and then steal second base. Cierra Yamamoto would ultimately win the game for UH with an RBI single up the middle, which was enough to bring Kai home.

Davis had one last chance in the seventh to force extra innings. After Sophia Eftekhari was walked, Polli hit a double down right field which put Eftekhari at third; however, Davis' hopes were ultimately dashed when Kilday was grounded out to UH's Ah Yat.

With the win, UH improves to 18-12 overall and 4-4 in Big West play. They are one win behind Long Beach State, UC Riverside, and UC Davis, who are tied for fourth in the standings at 5-4 each.

UH will hit the road for a tough three-game series against the Cal State Fullerton Titans at Anderson Family Field. They will face off in a single game on Friday, Mar. 28 at 3 p.m. HST, and in a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 29 at 10 a.m.
