Hawaiʻi softball earns 30th win in nailbiter over UC Davis
Three runs in final two innings gives Hawaiʻi softball 30th win
They found a way to win!
On Thursday, the Rainbow Wāhine Softball team finally stopped their five-game skid and defeated the UC Davis Aggies in dramatic fashion, 3-2, at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium.
UC Davis got on the board early in the first inning via Anna Dethlefson from a Libbie McMahan RBI. McMahan managed to get to third base on a fielder's choice.
The 'Bows came up empty when it was their turn, and they took much longer to get something started. After four scoreless innings, Bella Pahulu belted an RBI single in the top of the sixth, which allowed McMahan to score and make it 2-0 UC Davis. Little did Davis know that McMahan's run would be their final game score.
It looked like six losses in a row for Hawaiʻi, but they had an answer somewhere. At the bottom of the sixth, Haley Johnson answered the bell for Hawaiʻi with an RBI double to left center. That allowed Kaʻena Keliinoi and Xiao Gin to score and tie things up, 2-2.
In the seventh and final inning, Davis came up empty, which gave Hawaiʻi only one chance to win and avoid playing extra innings. Gin belted a single to right field, which allowed Cira Bartolotti to advance to third base. Davis then committed a costly throwing error, and Bartolotti made it home safely for the winning run, which gave Hawaiʻi the 3-2 win.
With the win, Hawaiʻi now improves to 30-21 this season and 13-12 in Big West play. They are now in a tie for fifth place in the standings with UC Davis. Hawaiʻi and UC Davis will meet again on Friday in a doubleheader that starts at 4 pm HST and 6 pm HST.
Friday will be Senior Day for the Rainbow Wāhine Softball team. They will bid aloha to seniors Amanda Ajari, Cira Bartolotti, Lepepaina "Princess" Matavao, and Rachel "Bueller" Sabourin.
