Hawaiʻi men's basketball gets another win over Cal Poly

'Bows keep Mustangs winless in 2024

The University of Hawaiʻi Men's Basketball team found yet another pot of gold at the Mott Athletics Center in San Luis Obispo, California with an easy 80-51 win over the Cal Poly Mustangs on Thursday.

Juan Munoz led Hawaiʻi with 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting, which included five triples. Justin McKoy was next with 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Ryan Rapp rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points all in the second half.

Cal Poly was led by Quentin Jones' 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tuukka Jaakkola also had 10 of his own.

JoVon McClanahan missed his third straight game for UH due to his shoulder injury, but Cal Poly lost two players themselves in Kobe Sanders (illness) and Joel Armotrading (knee).

The first half saw UH jump out to an early lead with efficient shooting. Cal Poly only led for a minute before their short-handed squad troubles took over.

With Sanders and Armotrading on the sidelines for Cal Poly, it showed, as they shot 23% (7-for-30), despite four turnovers committed.

UH used multiple runs to build a double-digit gap and used five triples to Cal Poly's two to extend their lead. Munoz hit three of those triples.

Despite Noel Coleman, Bernardo da Silva, and Tom Beattie getting put in foul trouble, UH still found ways to keep a good-sized lead.

At the half, UH had a healthy 35-20 lead. It was a good first half for the 'Bows, as they committed just three turnovers themselves. Munoz led all scorers with 13, followed by McKoy's 11.

Any hope Cal Poly had of their first conference win was immediately crushed, as UH shot out to a 12-2 run to begin the second half.

Despite 10 team fouls called in the first half, UH got more calls sent to Cal Poly in that second half. The Mustangs had nine team fouls before the 10-minute mark.

UH pulled out their lead to as many as 30, and they were not threatened in any way. Despite committing 10 turnovers in the second half, Cal Poly had nine turnovers themselves in the second half to tie the turnover score at 13.

The win for UH is their fifth in the last six games. They now improve to sixth place alone at 7-7 in the Big West standings and 15-11 overall while Cal Poly falls to 0-14 in the Big West and 4-22 overall.

The 'Bows will have a big task ahead as they will take on the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at the Thunderdome on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. HST. You can listen to the game on ESPN Honolulu or watch it on Spectrum SportsNet.
