Hawaiʻi softball splits doubleheader with UC San Diego

Shutout in first game fires up Wāhine to win game two over Tritons

Get this team mad, and you'll pay the price.

The University of Hawaiʻi Softball team vented their anger after a horrible game one loss, 2-0, to win game two, 5-2, and split their doubleheader with the UC San Diego Tritons at Triton Softball Field in La Jolla, California on Friday.

Game #1: 2-0 UCSD

The Tritons wasted no time to get on the board in game one. They loaded the bases right away, and newcomer Brooklyn Lee juiced an RBI double that drove in UCSD's Morgan Eng and Lexi O'Gorman.

Hawaiʻi pitcher Addison Kostrencich did an admirable job keeping UCSD scoreless for the last six innings. Kostrencich retired 11 consecutive Tritons and allowed just one walk. Sadly, UH did not have a chance to score a run until very late in the first game.

It took until the sixth inning for UH to finally have a chance to cause an upset. UH loaded the bases after a Haley Johnson walk with just one out. Unfortunately, UCSD pitcher India Caldwell dashed their hopes after she caught a Maya Nakamura pop fly, and Izabella Martinez got tagged at second base off a fielder's choice.

Game #2: 5-2 UH

The second game started similarly when UCSD drew first blood again from a Deena Pederson RBI single that drove in Eng in the first inning.

UH would take out their anger on UCSD in the next two innings. Chloe Borges logged UH's first run of the doubleheader off a wild pitch in the second to tie the score, 1-1.

In the third inning, Dallas Millwood belted an RBI single up the middle to drive in pinch runner Maya Ichimura, and Martinez. Just like that, UH found themselves ahead for the first time in the doubleheader, 3-1. It would remain that way for the next three innings.

In the seventh, Millwood hit a ground-rule double that drove in Johnson. Borges then used a sacrifice fly to right field, but Nakamura still scored to make it an RBI. It was now 5-1 UH, but UCSD had one last chance to send UH home the losers once again.

The Tritons loaded the bases after an Eng walk. Mariah Melendez was tagged out at home off a fielder's choice. Marissa Hassis would log UCSD's second run of the game after O'Gorman was tagged out off another fielder's choice. Their hopes were dashed when Mulligan got tagged out at second base for the final arithmetic.

UH improves to 12-17 overall and 5-3 in Big West play while UCSD falls to 13-21 overall and 6-3 in Big West play. Both teams will return to Triton Softball Field for a single contest on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 10 a.m. HST.
