Hawaiʻi softball splits opening day doubleheader

'Bows fall to UConn, defeat New Mexico in doubleheader

One out of two is not bad.

The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team scored three runs against the University of Connecticut Huskies and the New Mexico Lobos thanks to Maya Nakamura's two triple home runs. UConn still defeated UH, 4-3, in game one, but UH's three runs were enough to turn back New Mexico, 3-1, in game 2.

Game 1: UH Vs. UConn (4-3 UConn)

It was scoreless through the first five innings, but UConn answered the bell with a triple home run in the top of the sixth. Rosie Garcia belted a triple home run to get UConn on the board. Later, Kaitlyn Kibling scored another unearned run to make it 4-0 UConn.

When it was UH's turn, Nakamura belted a home run that drove in Cherish Hose and Piper Neri to put UH on the board, 4-3. UH had one last chance to seize the win in the seventh inning.

After UConn went scoreless in that seventh inning, UH got Madixx Muramoto on base when it was their turn. Unfortunately, UH's comeback was ruined after Xiao Gin struck out swinging.

Game 2: UH Vs. New Mexico (3-1 UH)

New Mexico wasted no time and got on the board first with a Chloe Yeatts RBI double that drove in teammate Rachael Hathoot. Ultimately, New Mexico would never score again after that.

It appeared to be a pitcher's duel from that point on, but Nakamura was not so sure about that.

In the bottom of the sixth, Nakamura belted another triple home run to left field to score Kaʻena Keliinoi and Haley Johnson. Just like that, UH found themselves up, 3-1.

"I haven't been hitting as well as I expected to or as personally as I would imagine how everybody else would have liked me to," Nakamura said.

New Mexico had no answer, and that was all she wrote.

UH will return to the diamond in another doubleheader on Friday at 3:30 p.m. HST against UConn and at 6 p.m. against New Mexico for day two of the 2024 Outrigger Rainbow Wāhine Classic.
