Hawaiʻi Softball coughs up six-run lead in final two innings

UC Riverside uses nine runs in final two innings to stun Hawaiʻi

You only have to lead the final inning.

On Friday, the Rainbow Wāhine Softball team jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over the UC Riverside Highlanders at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium, but Riverside outscored Hawaiʻi, 9-1, in the final two innings to stun the 'Bows, 9-7.

Hawaiʻi wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. After Maya Nakamura belted a single, Haley Johnson belted an RBI home run to make it 2-0 UH early.

After two scoreless innings, Izabella Martinez belted an RBI home run of her own in the fourth inning that allowed pinch runner Larissa Goshi to score as well to make it 4-0 UH.

Hawaiʻi got another double home run via Mya'Liah Bethea in the fifth inning, which allowed Malia Williams to score and make it 6-0 Hawaiʻi.

Unfortunately, the sixth inning was where things started to go wrong for the 'Bows. Marissa Burk bombed a triple home run to put the Highlanders on the board and cut Hawaiʻi's lead in half, 6-3. UH responded with a Nakamura RBI single, which allowed Cierra Yamamoto to score and make it 7-3 UH, but that was the last run UH would log.

In the top of the seventh, UC Riverside took advantage of loading the bases repeatedly and used two walks and two RBI singles to make UH's lead completely evaporate. Gigi Araki and Taylor Burdette added two more runs to make it 9-7 UCR. In total, UCR logged six runs to put them in front. The 'Bows could not log another run, and that was all she wrote.

UH will hope to bounce back with two wins on Saturday, April 15 in a doubleheader against UC Riverside at 4 pm HST and 6 pm HST at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium.
