Hawaiʻi softball opens conference with one win over Long Beach

'Bows softball with questions to answer after lone conference win

The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team began Big West Conference play at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium with a 6-1 win over the Long Beach State Beach on Friday but stumbled in their Saturday doubleheader with an 8-3 loss and a 9-1 loss in six innings. The Wāhine stumble to 1-2 in Big West play and 15-10 overall.

Game 1 (3/7/25): 6-1 UH

On Friday night, UH began Big West play with an emphatic 6-1 win over Long Beach.

UH struck first with two runs early. They loaded the bases when a Milan Ah-Yat RBI walk brought home Maycen Gibbs for the first score of the game. Carys Murakami then used a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home teammate Liliana Thomas for an early 2-0 lead.

Neither team saw a run until the fourth inning with Long Beach's Avery Weisbrook blasted a home run to centerfield to put Long Beach on the board; ultimately, Long Beach would not score again.

UH was ready when it was their turn. Chloe Borges blasted a home run of her own to centerfield to get the lead back to two, 3-1.

An inning later, UH put the clamps on the win with Thomas blasting a two-run homer of her own to centerfield, which brought in Gibbs. Ellyanna Cinzori got in the fray with an RBI single to left field, which was enough to bring in Ah-Yat for the final arithmetic.

Doubleheader Game 1 (3/8/25): 8-3 LBSU

On Saturday, UH was looking to bring their momentum into their doubleheader, but they were left with questions to answer after losing game one, 8-3.

Long Beach struck first with two runs in the first. Jacquelyn Bickar would blast a solo home run to left field, and an RBI walk on Malayna Terrones was enough to bring in Makayla Medellin for an early 2-0 lead.

Jamie McGaughey responded back for UH with a double home run to left field that brought in teammate Izabella Martinez when UH had their turn in the first. That tied the score at 2-2.

In the second, Long Beach came up empty while UH's Kayara Tuiloma hit an RBI single to left field to bring in teammate Cinzori to put UH in the lead.

Neither team saw a run until the fifth inning when Long Beach's Medellin blasted a double homer to left field to put Long Beach in front. From that point on, LBSU did the rest of the scoring, which included four runs in the seventh for the final arithmetic.

To make matters worse for UH, Thomas took a shot to the face early on and did not return. She was replaced by Alyssa Nakagawa.

Doubleheader Game 2 (3/8/25): 9-1 LBSU (6 innings)

UH's chances at seeking revenge after that loss were immediately crushed in game two. Long Beach put up five runs in the first four innings to put UH in an immediate hole.

UH loaded the bases in the fifth and finally got on the board when Long Beach walked Ah-Yat and brought in pinch runner Maya Ichimura. UH did avoid a shutout and kept the bases loaded for a possible grand slam. Unfortunately, Long Beach ruined the rally with a McGaughey fly out to left field.

Long Beach would slam the door on the win in the sixth with another four runs scored, and the mercy rule came into play.

UH will hit the road for a three-game series at Cal State Northridge starting with a single game on Friday, Mar. 14 at 10 a.m. HST, and in a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. HST.
