'Bows softball rebounds to split doubleheader with UC Davis
One is better than none.
The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team managed to split their Saturday doubleheader with the UC Davis Aggies with a 12-4 loss in eight innings in game one and a 6-0 win in game two at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium.
Game 1: 12-4 UCD (8 innings)
The Aggies struck first with two home runs from Grace Killday and Marley Panziera. That totaled three runs in the first inning. They added another run in the second from Gia Felice via a Mickey Buscemi RBI single to take an early 4-0 lead.
UH came up empty when it was their turn in the first, but Liliana Thomas got UH on the board with a solo home run. From that point, UH was able to keep Davis scoreless through the rest of the seven scheduled innings.
UH got to work after that Thomas homer. That started in the fourth inning with a Carys Murakami RBI single to left field to score Kayara Tuiloma. Next, Milan Ah Yat looped a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Maycen Gibbs.
While Davis repeatedly came up empty, UH tied it up in the fifth off a Millie Fidge RBI opposite-field single with the bases loaded. That brought Thomas home to tie the score at four.
Cierra Yamamoto began the sixth inning with a triple down right field, but Thomas could not execute a hit to bring her home. The seventh inning saw no runs from either team and extra innings were needed to settle things.
The Aggies ultimately stole the first win away from the 'Bows in that eighth inning. After not scoring a run since the second inning, they erupted for an incredible eight runs on eight hits alone.
UH had no answer when it was their turn and ended up on the losing side of things.
"I took it personally," Thomas said of that disastrous eighth inning. "I hate losing!"
Game 2: 6-0 UH
Upset by that first loss, UH rebounded to shut out UC Davis, 6-0, in game two. To add to the happiness, pitcher Macy Brandl pulled off a one-hit complete game.
After a scoreless first inning, UH struck first via Ellyanna Cinzori in the second. She whacked a double to left center to bring in teammate Jamie McGaughey. Chloe Borges then hit an RBI single which was enough to score Cinzori from second base for an early 2-0 lead.
After an empty third inning, Thomas brought the RWSS crowd to its feet with a solo home run to center field in the fourth. It was now 3-0 UH.
UC Davis, who got 15 hits in game one, had yet to log a hit in game two. Their lone hit did not come until the sixth inning via a Sydney Polli single.
UH kept the fire burning when it was their turn. McGaughey whacked a solo home run to left field to extend UH's lead to 4-0. Later on, UH loaded the bases, and Izabella Martinez tacked on two more runs with an RBI single that brought home Borges and Yamamoto for the final arithmetic.
Davis had one chance to score in the seventh when Bri Weekes got to first on a UH throwing error and then got to second. Weekes got to third on a Panziera sacrifice fly, but the Aggies' hopes were dashed when UH got a line out to Alyssa Dethlefson, and UH's Brandl struck out Bella Holtz to end the game.
UH and UCD will return to Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium on Sunday for a single game to conclude their series at 2 p.m. HST.
