Hawaiʻi softball double whammied in doubleheader

Multiple miscues doom Hawaiʻi softball team

The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team saw nothing but troubles in their doubleheader to Long Beach State at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium on Saturday as they fell, 6-2, in game one, and 8-0, in five innings in game two. They would lose the series, 1-2, marking their first series loss since Northridge on Mar. 24-25.

GAME #1: 6-2 LBSU

After three scoreless innings, Maycen Gibbs got Hawaiʻi on the board first with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.

Hawaiʻi efficiently hit their marks, and in the fifth inning, Maya Nakamura managed to make it home via a sacrifice fly from Izabella Martinez. Hawaiʻi then found themselves up 2-0.

From the sixth inning on, it was all Long Beach State. That started with a Sara Olson solo homer; numerous miscues by Hawaiʻi were soon to follow. Ultimately, Long Beach State put up six runs alone in the sixth inning and found themselves ahead 6-2, and that's how it stayed.

GAME #2: 8-0 LBSU (5 innings)

Any hope Hawaiʻi had of rebounding was immediately crushed due to multiple miscues.  After a scoreless first inning, Long Beach State hit the ground running almost immediately with four runs in the second.

After two more scoreless innings, Long Beach State got more good fortunes. Long Beach added four more runs in the fifth inning to make it an 8-0 lead while the miscues added up for Hawaiʻi. After five innings, the mercy rule came into play, which gave Long Beach the doubleheader sweep.

With the two losses, Hawaiʻi drops to 29-18 overall and 12-9 in Big West play. Hawaiʻi also ultimately saw its four-series win streak snapped simultaneously. The 'Bows also dropped into a three-way tie for fourth place in the Big West standings with UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis.

Hawaiʻi will hope to seek revenge against first-place Cal State Fullerton at Fullerton on Friday, May 5 at 3 p.m. HST, and in a doubleheader on Saturday, May 6 at 11 a.m. HST, and 1:30 p.m. HST.
