Hawaiʻi softball swept on senior night
'Bows double whammied by UC Davis
When it rains, it pours.
The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team concluded their 2023 season falling twice on Friday at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium to UC Davis, 6-1, and, 5-2, on senior night. Simultaneously, seniors Amanda Ajari, Cira Bartolotti, Lepepaina "Princess" Matavao, and Rachel "Bueller" Sabourin were honored.
GAME #1 (6-1 UC Davis)
Hawaiʻi found themselves in an immediate hole after UC Davis logged the first run of the game via Anna Dethlefson. After an early rain delay, Leah Polson added a second run to make it 2-0 UC Davis.
Hawaiʻi did not get on track at all and kept making miscues. After two scoreless innings (and another rain delay), UC Davis added one run in the remaining four innings, which included home runs from Dethlefson and Bella Pahulu. Hawaiʻi got on the board in the bottom of the sixth via senior Ajari from a Haley Johnson RBI.
Game #2 (5-2 UC Davis)
Even after hitting the reset button, nothing still went right for Hawaiʻi. For the first two innings, any hit they put up was either fouled or caught by UC Davis players.
In the second inning, Delaney Diaz belted a solo homer for the first run of the game. Grace Kilday would score the second run for UC Davis via a Polson RBI. Those two runs put UH back to square one.
Bartolotti finally got UH on the board in the third inning via a solo home run to right center field. Then, Izabella Martinez belted an RBI single that allowed Kaʻena Keliinoi to score and tie the game at 2-2.
Unfortunately, UC Davis responded and got the two runs back the very next inning via Kilday and Dethlefson. Hawaiʻi tried all they could, but nobody could log another run.
Davis added a final run in the sixth inning via Dethlefson from a fielding error for the final score of 5-2.
UH officially ends their season at 30-23 overall and sixth place in the Big West standings at 13-14. For now, the wait for the 2024 season officially begins.
