Hawaiʻi men's basketball suffers first home loss to UC San Diego

22-3 UC San Diego run dooms Hawaiʻi in home loss

An unfortunate first happened.

A depleted crowd of over 1,300 saw the University of Hawaiʻi Men's Basketball team lose to the UC San Diego Tritons at home for the first time, 74-63, on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Akira Jacobs, Kody Williams and Ryan Rapp led the 'Bows with 11 points apiece. The next closest was Harry Rouhliadeff with seven.

Tyler McGhie led the Tritons with 24 on 8-for-17 shooting. Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones chipped in 16 on 6-for-12 shooting. Haiden Gray had 13 and Nordin Kapic added 11 of his own.

The Tritons scored the first five points of the game, but UH got on the board via Rouhliadeff from long range. UH found a rhythm early and took the lead off a Jerome Palm layup.

UH would lead throughout the first half after that Palm layup and withstood a 17-5 UCSD run to end the first half. Despite 12 turnovers committed, UH still led, 34-33, at the break; however, UH shot very well in the first half, including 7-for-9 from 3-point range.

UH came firing out of the locker rooms to score eight of the first 10 points of the second half. They would pull out their lead to 12 at one point, but it all changed in one devastating instant.

Tanner Christensen was called for a flagrant foul while a common foul was called on UCSD's McGhie. UH led 47-38 at that time, but that did not last long.

UCSD would overhaul UH to the tune of a 22-3 run to ultimately never look back. They would not let their lead dip below five once they retained control.

UH drops to 4-6 in Big West play and still remain tied for seventh in the standings and 12-9 overall. They will return to the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday, Feb. 1 in a vital matchup against the Cal State Fullerton Titans at 7 p.m. HST. You can listen to the game on ESPN Honolulu or watch on Spectrum Sports.
