Hawaiʻi softball explodes for two straight wins over Cleveland State
Six runs in fifth inning alone put ʻBows in the win column
After shutting out the Cleveland State Vikings, 13-0, in five innings on Saturday, the Rainbow Wāhine Softball team continued their good fortunes with another win, 6-1, at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium on Sunday.
After a scoreless first inning, Dakota Staffan scored the first run of the game for Cleveland State off an RBI, which drove in Emma Gilkerson.
UH took a while to get going, but they had a chance in the third inning when they loaded the bases. Unfortunately, a pop fly from Dallas Millwood was caught, and UH's opportunity was ruined.
There was a bit of a scare in the fourth inning when catcher Izabella Martinez took a shot to her left knee and had to be helped off the field. Martinez did not return to the game but appeared to be okay afterward.
“I think at first, everybody was a little shaken up, but we’re all mature enough to reset,” Maya Nakamura said of Martinez. “She’ll be fine. She was walking around [and] smiling.”
The ‘Bows had another chance to score, but a pop fly to left field by Xiao Gin was also caught.
Fortunately, while the Vikings remained scoreless, the ‘Bows came to life in the fifth inning. Nakamura started things with an RBI single that drove in Madixx Muramoto and Kaʻena Keliinoi. They were not done yet.
UH kept the good fortunes going after Dallas Millwood belted an RBI single that drove in Nakamura. Millwood would score next after another Vikings error. Gin belted an RBI single which drove in two more runs via Mya’Liah Bethea and Keely Kai. Just like that, it was 6-1 UH.
Cleveland State had no answer for the final two innings, and that was all she wrote.
UH will begin Big West conference play on the road at UC Santa Barbara this coming Friday, Mar. 15 at 10 a.m. HST, and on Saturday, Mar. 16 in a doubleheader at 9 and 11:30 a.m. HST.
