The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team began their final season in the Big West with a doubleheader split over the UC Davis Aggies at La Rue Field in Davis, CA on Friday. They won the first game, 5-0, and lost the second game, 2-1. Game #1: 5-0 UH After two scoreless innings, UH broke the ice in the third inning with four runs logged; ultimately, UH did all the scoring then. Rhea Furtado led that third inning with a single to second base. Carys Murakami followed with a grounder to second base, but Furtado and Murakami were able to advance to third and second bases respectively off of two Davis errors! Maycen Gibbs was able to bring in Furtado off an RBI single to put UH on the board, and they weren't done yet!
Gibbs was able to steal second base, and teammate Jamie McGaughey was able to bring in Murakami and Gibbs via a 2 RBI single to right field! UH swapped McGaughey with pinch runner Kennedy Thompson afterwards; Thompson got to second off a Larissa Goshi sacrifice bunt.
Thompson scored from second base off a Maya Ichimura RBI single to left field to give UH a 4-0 lead. It remained that way until the seventh and final inning.
McGaughey juiced an RBI double to left center in that seventh inning that was enough to bring in Gibbs for the final score. UH was able to retire the next three UC Davis batters at the bottom of the seventh!
Game #2: 2-1 UC Davis UH hoped to carry the momentum into game two, but that was not meant to be.
Davis got on the board first via a Sydney Polli fielder's choice. Teammate Gia Felice scored off an error to take an early 1-0 lead; it could have been two runs, but teammate Anna Dethlefson was tagged out at home! UH never got on the board until the fifth inning when Millie Fidge hit an RBI double to right center to bring in Kayara Tuiloma to tie the score at 1-1. It came down to the final inning.
Davis never let a UH runner get past first base in the top of the seventh inning. They got two outs early on Bailey Nagasako and struck out Milan Ah Yat; Ellyanna Cinzori was walked after that, but teammate Neveah Telles struck out after that to end UH's chances of logging one run. Davis' Kayla Macias delivered the game-winning RBI single down left field that brought in Vanessa Calvillo for the final score.
UH begins conference play at 1-1 and improve to 9-11 overall. Both teams will return to La Rue Field on Saturday, March 7 for a single game at 12 pm HST.
