The University of Hawaiʻi Softball team avenged its loss in the back half of Friday's doubleheader and defeated the UC Davis Aggies, 9-1, on Saturday at La Rue Field in Davis, CA! For the second straight season, UH defeated UC Davis in the series, 2-1!
After a scoreless first inning, UH got on the board in the second inning. Bailey Nagasako was walked, and Milan Ah Yat blasted a double home run to right field to bring in Nagasako for an early 2-0 lead! They threatened a third run when Kayara Tuiloma got to third off a sacrifice bunt from Neveah Telles, but Davis got two straight outs on Rhea Furtado and Carys Murakami.
UC Davis got a run back when catcher Naomi Kalanetra blasted a solo home run to center! The Aggies were now down, 2-1!
UH was not intimidated and did all the scoring the rest of the way.
After a scoreless third inning, Nagasako started the top of the fourth with a single. After swapping Nagasako with pinch runner Keely Kai, Ah Yat came to the rescue with an RBI triple to bring in Kai and got that lost run back! Tuiloma followed with an RBI triple of her own to bring in Ah Yat for a 4-1 lead, but UH was far from done.
Tuiloma was kept at third after UCD struck out Millie Fidge and Teiah Keliiholokai, but Murakami was the woman for the job! Murakami hit that RBI single to left field, and Tuiloma scored! That totaled three UH runs alone before Maycen Gibbs was grounded out to the shortstop to end the fourth inning. It was now 5-1 UH.
After two more scoreless innings, UH added another four runs to end the game. In the seventh inning, after singles from Murakami and Gibbs, Jamie McGaughey hit an RBI double to center field that brought in both Murakami and Gibbs while McGaughey advanced to third on the throw!
McGaughey was swapped out with pinch runner Kennedy Thompson. Kolbi Kochi brought in Thompson with an RBI single to right center to make it 8-1 UH! Kochi was swapped with pinch runner Abby Sasaki after that.
Sasaki got to second off a Kai sacrifice bunt; Ah Yat added another RBI single to her mantle and brought in Sasaki to make it 9-1 UH! Although Ah Yat got to second on the throw, she was left stranded after Tuiloma and Telles were flied out and popped out respectively. UH ultimately shut the door on Davis and retired their next three batters!
UH improves to 10-11 overall, and 2-1 in Big West play! They will return home to Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium on Friday, March 13 for a doubleheader at 4 pm HST and a single game on Saturday, March 14 at 1 pm HST.
