The fire is still burning in them!
The University of Hawaiʻi Softball team successfully took the series, 2-1, over Long Beach State with a come-from-behind win, 3-2, at the LBSU Complex in Long Beach, CA! UH has won their first series over Long Beach since 2019!
Long Beach's Lina Apodaca was hit by a pitch after LBSU retired UH's first three batters in order in the first inning. Apodaca then got to second on a wild pitch, and then to third off a sacrifice bunt from teammate Avery Weisbrook. Priscilla Iniguez brought in Apodaca on a sacrifice fly out to right field to put LBSU on the board first, 1-0.
In the top of the second inning, with one out logged, Millie Fidge uncorked a solo home run to right field to tie the score at 1-1!
Long Beach got that run back when it was their turn. Audree Mendoza hit an RBI single to the shortstop to bring in teammate Brooklyn Lee and put LBSU back up, 2-1!
After three empty innings, it appeared that would be the final arithmetic, but UH pulled a proverbial rabbit out of their hat in the sixth inning!
Carys Murakami was walked to begin the inning, then got to second on a wild pitch. Teammate Maycen Gibbs hit an RBI single to left field which was enough to allow Murakami to score from second base and tie the score again at 2-2; simultaneously, due to a Long Beach throwing error, Gibbs was able to get all the way to third base! Jamie McGaughey was able to bring Gibbs home off a sacrifice fly out to right field and give UH its first lead, 3-2.
Kayara Tuiloma began the seventh inning with a triple, but she was ultimately left stranded after Long Beach retired UH's next three batters! UH returned the favor in the bottom of the seventh to end the game!
UH will return home to Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium for a 3-game series against the Cal State Northridge Matadors beginning with a single game on Friday, March 27 at 6 pm HST!
