The University of Hawaiʻi Softball team got all three games against the Cal State Fullerton Titans completed on Sunday at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium and fell, 2-1, in their series. They would win game one, 3-0, but dropped their doubleheader, 7-5 and 6-5.
The three-game series was supposed to take place on Friday, but due to heavy rains from the severe Kona Storm, a single game was rescheduled for Thursday, Mar. 12.
Game #1: 3-0 UH (Mar. 12, 15)
After a scoreless first inning, Milan Ah Yat and Neveah Telles were hit by pitches to begin the inning. Ah Yat and Cierra Yamamoto were tagged out after fielder's choices for two quick CSF outs. Despite that, UH scored first via a CSF fielding error with Carys Murakami at bat; Telles was able to score from second base to give UH an early 1-0 lead!
After a scoreless third inning, Fullerton again came up empty in the fourth, but a downpour of rain came when it was UH's turn and Yamamoto at first. After 20 minutes, the game was suspended until Sunday, March 15.
When gameplay resumed then, UH loaded the bases after Telles sacrifice bunt, and a Murakami walk! Maycen Gibbs juiced an RBI single to right field that brought in Yamamoto, and Jamie McGaughey used a sacrifice fly to second base to bring in Telles. It was 3-0 UH, and it stayed that way for the final three innings.
Game #2: 7-5 CSF (Mar. 15)
After two scoreless innings, Fullerton scored first in the third inning! Colby McClinton stole second base while teammate Kate Verhoef stole home to put CSF on the board, 1-0. McClinton scored next off a Nataly Lozano RBI double to left center to make it 2-0 CSF.
UH came up empty when it was their turn, but in the fourth, Ah Yat blasted a home run to left center to put UH on the board, 2-1!
Fullerton responded an inning later with four runs scored. It started when Alexia Lopez hit a solo home run to center field! Next, Lozano hit an RBI double to left center to bring in teammate Briona Ferdman. Ava Arce added more insult to injury with a double home run to bring in Lozano to make it a 6-1 CSF lead!
UH tried to rally back when it was their turn. With the bases loaded, an RBI walk with Ah Yat at bat brought in Gibbs. Kayara Tuiloma hit a 2 RBI single to left that brought in Millie Fidge and McGaughey!
In the sixth, UH scored again off a CSF fielding error with Briana Maio-Silva at bat! It brought in Larissa Goshi to put UH down one, 6-5!
Fullerton's Arce added an RBI single in the seventh to bring in Sarah Coccillos, and it was 7-5 CSF!
UH's Ah Yat was hit by a pitch and got to second on a Tuiloma single. A home run was all UH needed, but they loaded the bases off an Ellyanna Cinzori walk for a possible grand slam! It wasn't meant to be though, as Murakami struck out, and Cinzori was tagged out off a Gibbs fielder's choice to the shortstop!
Game #3: 6-5 CSF (Mar. 15)
Angered by that thwarted comeback, UH came into the final game fired up! They loaded the bases early, and Millie Fidge uncorked her first career grand slam that brought in McGaughey, Gibbs, and Murakami for an early 4-0 lead!
Fullerton was not intimidated themselves and scored six runs through the next four innings with five of those off of three separate home runs via Arce and Lozano. Arce hit a double home run in the second inning that brought in Coccillos, and a solo homer in the fourth. Lozano hit a double home run of her own in the fourth before that which also brought in Coccillos. Just like that, Fullerton jumped in front, 6-4!
UH tried to rally again, but they were ultimately held to a single home run from Ah Yat in the sixth inning!
UH drops to 3-3 in Big West play and 11-13 overall. They will hit the road for a three-game series at Long Beach State's LBSU Softball Complex. They will play a doubleheader on Friday, March 20 at 1:30 pm HST, and a single game on Saturday, March 21 at 3:30 pm HST.
