Get out the brooms, everybody!
The Rainbow Wāhine Softball team swept all three games against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners with a doubleheader sweep, 10-8, and 14-0, in five innings on Friday, and an 8-0 win in five innings on Saturday, Apr. 11 at Rainbow Wāhine Softball Stadium.
Doubleheader Game 1: 10-8 UH
On Friday, despite a rain delay of two-and-a-half hours before the first pitch, UH showed that they meant business! UH jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning due to a Jamie McGaughey double home run that brought in teammate Maycen Gibbs!
After an empty second inning, Bakersfield used two runs of their own to tie the score in the third, and another two runs in the fourth to take the lead, 4-2.
UH responded in the fourth when it was their turn with four runs of their own. That included RBIs from Kolbi Kochi, Carys Murakami, and a triple from Gibbs.
Bakersfield got a run back in the sixth, but UH used another four runs when it was their turn to extend the lead, 10-5.
Things got dicey in the seventh inning when Bakersfield scored another three runs via two fielder's choices, and Sabrina Erran was hit by a pitch, but that was the closest they got. Kayla Whaley was grounded out at second base.
Doubleheader Game 2: 14-0 UH (5 innings)
Still riding high after that first game, UH did all the scoring in game two of their doubleheader. They logged a whopping seven runs in two separate innings to force a 14-0 mercy rule win in five innings!
In the second, Kayara Tuiloma hit an RBI single to bring in Milan Ah Yat. Then, Rhea Furtado hit an RBI single of her own and got to second on a Bakersfield throwing error while Tuiloma was brought in, along with Kochi. Then, Gibbs hit a rare 2-run in-the-park home run to bring in Murakami.
McGaughey then hit a double home run herself to left field to bring in teammate Millie Fidge. Just like that, UH led, 7-0!
Then, gameplay was halted for an hour due to rain, but UH was not affected one iota! After an empty third inning, UH used another seven runs while Bakersfield made a bunch of miscues and a total of three errors. The errors allowed Abby Sasaki, Rhea Furtado, and Neveah Telles to score runs, and Telles added a 2 RBI single during that rally. Cierra Yamamoto put the bow on the package with another run via Bakersfield's third error for the final run of the night!
After eight runs for Bakersfield in game one, they were held to a single hit in game two while UH logged 15 hits alone! In total, the doubleheader had lasted a whopping six-and-a-half hours due to the rain delays.
Game #3 (4/11/26): 8-0 UH (5 innings)
Less than 24 hours later, UH still had their mojo going from the night before and won 8-0 in five innings via the mercy rule once again!
Carys Murakami hit a single, and Maycen Gibbs was walked to begin things for UH. Jamie McGaughey did her thing and hit an RBI double to bring in both Murakami and Gibbs.
An inning later, Kolbi Kochi hit a solo home run to center field, her second of the season. After Kayara Tuiloma hit a double, Murakami used an RBI single to bring in Tuiloma to make the lead, 4-0!
UH kept Bakersfield scoreless and used four more runs to win the game via a walkoff. Milan Ah Yat brought Larissa Goshi with an RBI single! With Ah Yat and Cierra Yamamoto on base, Briana Maio-Silva cleared the bases with an RBI double to right center. Teiah Keliiholokai ended the game with an RBI single to left center and brought in Keely Kai for the final score!
UH will hit the road for four games beginning with a non-conference matchup against San Diego on Thursday, Apr. 15 at 2 pm HST. That's followed by a 3-game series with UC San Diego beginning on Friday, Apr. 17 at 3 pm HST and ending with their doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 18 starting at 9 AM HST.
